The Infiltrators
By Philip Etiene and Martin Hayward
with Tony Thompson

I bought this book from the poundshop, I had not even so much as read the blurb on the back, but simply judged the book by it's cover and title. It is very rare that this method of selection pays off, but in this case it couldn't have been more on the ball.

The InfiltratorsTo be honest, while I was reading the book I had no idea that it was a true story, the fact it has the words "The explosive true story of Scotland Yard's Secret Undercover Unit" did not seem to clue me in. At best guess I probably never noticed the wording on the cover.

Without a doubt this was one of the best books I had read in a long time, when I then found out that it was a true story I was gobsmacked. This book contains action, mystery and scandal.

Martin and Philip were both members of the SO10 group, everyone has heard of SO19 - the armed response unit. SO10 specialises in undercover work, and from what is said in the book it appears to be deep undercover with absolutely no backup.

Both Martin and Philip lead successful careers with SO10 and meet by chance during an operation, they befriend each other but disaster strikes on an operation that they both felt pretty poorly about. Management make a few mistakes but unfortunately it is Philip and Martin who suffer for it.

Most of all this book gives an insight into Londons underworld, it gives no illusions as to how things are. The events are not glamourised in the way that Hollywood would twist them.

I have every intention of recommending this book to everyone I know, and I will certainly be reading it again. I think given that it is published by Penguin, having the book turn up in my local poundshop is something of a miracle!
