BT Replace faulty Powerline Adaptors

Readers may recall that we highlighted a minor security issue in ComTrend's Powerline Adaptors.

Well a more serious issue has arisen with the devices, supplied to BT-Vision customers. Although accompanied by very little fanfare, BT have started recalling and replacing a subset of the devices following the discovery of safety issues.

The case on some of these devices is likely to disintegrate, leaving the user open to the risk of electric shock. BT won't admit what percentage of customers are likely to be affected, simply saying that it's a "tiny percentage" of the estimated 300,000 users of the device.

BT says that affected users will be receiving replacements through the post, and that those who do not receive a parcel don't need to worry.

BT has informed users that they should visit this page if they have any concerns whatsoever.

The affected model is the DH10P, which is the second version of the Powerline adaptor distributed by BT. It is a white/cream adaptor with the 3Pin socket sitting above the devices controls. The newer black and older inverted adaptors appear to be unaffected.

This announcement may prove a convenient prompt for those who consider the devices highly controversial. There have been numerous complaints about RF interference caused by these devices, with the newer models allegedly interfering with FM radio. The Civil Aviation Authority has raised concerns about the safety of the device, and even the BBC have complained about the devices interfering with the World Service.
